Our partner interview with Viscosity North America at Kscope16

Although Kscope16 is long gone, one of our favourite things about this conference was the opportunity to learn about how our partners and customers leverage the FOEX Plugin Framework in their projects.

Sure, it’s all great for us to highlight the benefits of using FOEX through demos and case studies, but to hear it from the people who are actually using it day by day adds a totally new flavour to the mix.

Below you’ll see our first interview, with Jerry Ward, the Managing Partner of Viscosity North America – a certified FOEX Gold Partner. We talk about his experience with FOEX, the advantages of using it and what are some of the typical projects where they have used the FOEX Plugin Framework. A full transcript of the discussion can be found below the video.

Markus Lauda:
Well, we are partners for a long time, but I would like to know how long is Viscosity dealing with FOEX? How long are we implementing our solution?
Jerry Ward:

Well, Markus, before we were a partner, we were a customer. This was about 4 years ago, and we’ve been developing applications for our clients over the last 4 years and these applications are used by hundreds of companies who are in turn our clients’ clients.

Prior to that I was developing in pure APEX for about 12 years.

Markus Lauda:
So taking this experience what would you say is the advantage of using FOEX and the FOEX Plugin Framework in a project?
Jerry Ward:
Well, first I would say that FOEX in combination with the Oracle database and APEX, are a low-code platform that allow you to deliver rich, desktop-like applications very quickly.
Markus Lauda:
How fast can you develop apps with FOEX?
Jerry Ward:

On average development with FOEX is 5 times faster than is possible with a Java or a JavaScript framework.

In addition, when you compare FOEX with pure APEX development there are certain advantages around the additional components that FOEX provides. These additional components allow you to do complex applications for, or larger type applications for enterprise customers.

Markus Lauda:
Talking about customers, how do they see FOEX?
Jerry Ward:

Another advantage is that FOEX brings Sencha to the table and if you’re dealing with a large corporate customer who has a very specific framework this helps you leverage APEX even more because Sencha is in over 60 percent of the Fortune 100 companies.

Our larger corporate clients really like that about FOEX.

Markus Lauda:
So, taking your experience with a lot of projects that you’re in, what is the typical project you’d see FOEX in?
Jerry Ward:

First I’d say that any customer with an Oracle database can leverage FOEX for any web application.

We have an Oil & Gas customer who has a gas pipeline accounting system legacy application. This application was written in PowerBuilder and it included over 500 screens so, the complexity was very high on the back-end they had over 750 tables.

So, they have tried twice previously to replace this application using a Java Groovy framework and they were unsuccessful and after spending millions of dollars they engaged us and FOEX, to take on the project. We were able to deliver successfully in a fraction of the time and costs that they were expecting.

In the healthcare space, we leveraged FOEX to build a contract management application that helps hospital networks better manage their contracts for services. This services include elevator maintenance, blood bank management, hiring of nurses, that sort of things.

With FOEX we were able to build an application that drives costs out of healthcare and this application is leveraged by over 450 hospital networks here in the US.

Markus Lauda:
Well, it’s a very nice project.
Jerry Ward:
Yes, indeed!
Markus Lauda:
I have to say ‘Thank you’ for answering these questions, hope that we have a successful Kscope,
Jerry Ward:
Absolutely!
Markus Lauda:
and some nice projects within the next years!
Jerry Ward:
Absolutely, thank you Markus!
