Our customer interview with IRCS Inc. at Kscope16

A while back we talked about the partner interview we did at Kscope. Sure, you may say that partners might be a bit more subjective when it comes to evaluating FOEX and quite rightfully ask: what do your customers have to say about using the FOEX Plugin Framework?

Today I’d like to show you just that: what one of our customers has to say about using our solution to enhance Oracle APEX and develop an electronic healthcare records application.

Below you’ll see our interview with Chris Freeman, the COO of IRCS Inc. His company has rebuilt Vireo – an electronic healthcare records application, with a combination of Oracle APEX and FOEX. Initially their solution was developed by using Oracle Forms and Reports.

Chris shares the reasons for which they needed to enhance the functionality of APEX, why they opted to use FOEX and who, in his opinion, should consider to use FOEX in their projects. A full transcript of the discussion can be found below the video.

Markus Lauda:
Hi Chris. Good morning!
Chris Freeman:
Nice to meet you Markus! … Good morning Markus!
Markus Lauda:
Good morning. I’m happy to meet you here at Kscope and I’d like to use this meeting to get a little bit more about what you do with FOEX, I know you’re a customer for a long time already, so, I have some questions for you.
Markus Lauda:
How long do you use the FOEX Plugin Framework?
Chris Freeman:
We’ve been using FOEX for 3 years, a little bit over 3 years.
Markus Lauda:
So, what was the reason you decided to use the FOEX Plugin Framework?
Chris Freeman:
We chose to use the FOEX framework because it had some features that APEX did not. Namely, we had one requirement for a Master and six Details, six cascading Details.
Markus Lauda:
What was the background where you came from? You said that APEX couldn’t manage it so, what did you use before?
Chris Freeman:
We used Oracle Forms and Reports.
Markus Lauda:
Can you tell me a bit more about what have you developed with the FOEX Plugin Framework?
Chris Freeman:
We have written a commercial electronic healthcare records application with FOEX as our basis. We have, I think, 136 plugins installed, 129 of those are FOEX plugins.
Markus Lauda:
Quite important for me is to know what do our customers like most out of the FOEX Plugin Framework. So, what’s the most important thing, what do you like most out of it?
Chris Freeman:
What I like most about it is how quickly I can build a feature full page. It really is fast, with the FOEX Developer Addon and everything. We really enjoy how quickly we can build and how accurately we can lay out a data dense page.
There are a lot of people that say that APEX is for the easy stuff and ADF is for the complex stuff.
I think what FOEX does is that it pushes APEX into the complex stuff and so, it really, if you think about it this way, it might eliminate a need for ADF. Which, is way too much of a framework way too many moving parts to keep running for a small organization like us.
Because of those issues we never considered ADF. We had to stay with something simple enough that we could keep running right and really, FOEX enables us to leverage the simplicity and performance of APEX and actually make something maybe look like closer to ADF.
One of the neat things that I like about having a FOEX framework within APEX is that, we have the freedom to use FOEX where it’s good to use FOEX, especially within a desktop environment, because it still looks like the same application no matter if you go to a vanilla APEX page or FOEX, and we can use APEX where it’s appropriate to use APEX.
Markus Lauda:
Who do you think should use the FOEX Plugin Framework?
Chris Freeman:
I think that anybody who needs more than what vanilla APEX can provide should use FOEX. I think the FOEX Developer Addon gives you so much productivity and it’s so quick to be able to create a page that is a very rich environment. It really enables our very small developer team to build and maintain a pretty large application suite.
Markus Lauda:
Well, so I have to say ‘Thank you for the interview!’ and hope that you’ll enjoy the last day here at Kscope!
Chris Freeman:
Thank you very much!
